Funding for research

There are many sources of funding opportunities for applied health research including the NIHR, Research Councils and major charities. We work with people developing grant applications mainly on NIHR funding programmes. To find out more about the different NIHR funding programmes, simply click on the diagram below or visit the NIHR website.

Our Project Review Committee provides an excellent opportunity for researchers to obtain a critical review of a proposed grant application before this is sent to a funding body.

Plain English summaries in NIHR funded research

The NIHR is committed to making sure that research is easy to understand by those who may not be familiar with scientific vocabulary or medical jargon. Therefore, applicants for NIHR funding are required to submit, as part of the standard application form, a good quality plain English summary about their research. This summary will be assessed as part of the review process and, if found not to be of a good quality, applicants might be asked to improve it as a condition of funding. Further information is available on NIHR's 'make it clear' web page.

Contact us for further support and advice on writing a plain English summary.

  NIHR Themed Calls

Themed research calls are issued by the NIHR to meet an identified health challenge or government priority. Calls for funding will be promoted in advance whenever possible and clearly advertised on NIHR websites. All research programmes, including NIHR fellowships, will participate in the themed call as far as their remit allows.

Further details about the current themed calls can be found on the NIHR website.
